Ms. Darling has given us a quickly-paced story told by a smart, emotional narrator. I was swept along with the action, but still enjoyed the contemplative moments to catch my breath. The character, Jessie, doesn't spend a long time worrying before she takes off after the scent, though she does worry often. I could relate to the way her mind wandered in and out of the past at the oddest time. Those bits are written in the very realistic way we think -- short, incomplete sentences. Her voice made this beach mystery different, and enjoyable.
Jesse Lockwood, Lee Darling's protagonist in her first novel, "Just out of Reach", displays the down-to-earth qualities of someone who grew up in a small town where everyone know everyone, yet who has acquired the assertive traits of a single woman who has learned the skills necessary to swim upstream. She tenaciously follows her gut instinct as she home bases on the southtern Oregon Coast to answer the questions around the missing brother of a former high school classmate. Lee introduces some delightful and very grounded supporting characters, two of whom form the glue to hold things together while Jesse is trying to find herself and the missing person. It is an enjoyable and engaging novel that I ended up reading straight through, when I only wanted to "take a look". This should be on the list of those who enjoy an unfolding read, especially if the Oregon Coast is a setting that one appreciates.
